Amish Pie – 1936 Vintage Recipe

AMISH PIE I cup sugar 3 cups flour 2/3 cup vegetable fa t and Gutter, mixed 3/4 cup molasses 1 cup warm water 1 teaspoon soda Mix the sugar, flour and shortening together until medium fine crumbs are formed. Mix the molasses with the water in which the soda has been dissolved. Pour into a pastry-lined pie pan and sprinkle with the crumbs. Bake in a hot oven (425 to 450 degrees) for 10 minutes then reduce the oven to 350 degrees and continue baking until the filling is firm. Remove the pie from the oven and serve warm or cold.
